BIRTHDAY BOYS TOP TABLE

Coming of age was the order of the evening last Friday night at The Welfare.  In November six of this years youth squad had their 18th birthdays.  After the entertainment on the field there was a further celebration for Jacob Hill, Cole Jones, Iwan Burgwin, Taylor Hansen, Zac Hewlett and George Price in the club with all their team mates and family (photo above).

Earlier in the week Jones had celebrated on his birthday by representing the Crawshays Welsh Youth in their win over Christ College, Brecon.

On the field it was Friday night rugby watched by a crowd numbering in the hundreds despite the bitter conditions.  The battle of the top two teams in the Dragons Youth “A” League saw last seasons Gwent Cup winners and League runners up NHSOB as the visitors.

NHSOB took the lead through an early penalty and did well territorially through the kicking of outside half Aneurin Owen.  However any attacking threat their backs tried to get under way was completely negated by the excellent DA defence.

For DA the howitzer boot of Robbie Turley levelled the scores at 3-3 with an excellent penalty.

Then big number 8 Garin Price raced over in the score board corner to take DA into the lead 8-3 and stunningly that’s how the score remained.

DA remain top of the division with nearest rivals now Senghenydd Youth five points behind from the same number of games.

Next up for DA is the most successful youth team in recent years in the Dragons Region,  Penallta Youth.  They meet in the new Dragons Youth Cup next Friday night on the plastic pitch at the Ystrad Mynach Centre of Excellence.  KO is a late one at 7:45.

DC also play Friday night as they visit Chepstow for league fixture.

Saturday December 9th sees DA visit Pencoed in the next round of the Welsh Youth Cup with a place in the quarter finals as the prize.
