Dragons Cup 2015

On a day when the sun was only seen for brief moments and the wind and rain battled for dominance, Eleven sides from the Dragons region turned

up to battle it out for the re-instated Dragons Cup.

By the time we got there, Blackwood had already fallen to Nelson and we had heard that Cwmbran had narrowly beaten Senghenydd in the last play

of that game. We kicked off our first game against Caldicot which proved a bit trickier than first imagined as the wind, rain and first game

nerves took their toil. We came through it with a 17-5 win, but a slightly shakey start to what was to be a long wet Sunday. Newport High

School Old Boys were next and we thought that this would be one of the teams that could possibly derail us on the day, but our boys initial nerves

were long gone and we then saw the Newbridge that we were accustomed to. Our boys flying to a resounding 38-0 win...the gas had been turned on and the boys

were cooking.
Cwmbran went down 14-7 to Nelson who were looking like the team to beat and a possibility of a final matchup if we beat Rhymney in the Semi-

final. However, Newbridge were not only cooking on gas but had turned all the rings on the hob right up to full with a 33-0 win over the red and blacks to get into the

final. The Semi between Nelson and St Josephs turned out to be an absolute nailbiter with the final minutes ticking away as Nelson were

pressing for the try that would get them through. It was not to be however, as St Joes took the game with a close 10-7 win.

In the Final, St Joes came at us with a passion and it was still 0-0 after ten minutes, when the referee (should have gone to Specsavers) pulled us back for a knock-on after

we had thought we were over for our first try. Our boys had obviously upset the ref in some way as penalties seemed to be hitting us thick and

fast and within a few minutes St Joes had us up against our try line. The Newbridge defence were more than equal to it though and we came through a few testing moments to

eventually grab the first try which seemed to open up St Joes armour. The Newbridge boys got a whiff of success and not only did the gas go up

to 11, they seemed to put the hotplate and the grill on for the last ten minutes and we crossed for a few more well deserved tries before the final whistle. Final score Newbridge 28,

St Josephs 0.

Well Done to St Josephs and well done Newbridge for a final that was played with great spirit and attitude on both sides.
