Slip Sliding Away

Newbridge hosted Abercwmboi this morning on the Canal Fields. It was a good turnout and some of them had clearly taken some tips from the recent Autumn internationals. Abercwmboi won the toss and kicked off. They went through a few phases and showed some great handling skills, but the Newbridge defence was rock solid this week. Newbridge turned the ball over on a number of occassions with some great tackling by all of them, but notably Evan Maher, Charlie Hughes and Rio Porter. When Newbridge gained the ball they showed some flair with a few switches and dummy switches to keep Abercwmboi on thier toes, and it wasnt long until Elis Rees opened the scoring. Newbridge continued to turn the ball over and Charlie Hughes burst through the defence to score a try. Newbrdige applied more pressure and a great dummy switch by Evan Maher opened up the defence, he put his after burners on and enjoyed the run so much he nearly ran through the canal and up the mountain before he put the ball down.

A few changes were made at half time, but it was pretty much the same thing. Ashton Gunter and Finlay Carpenter made some good ground and then the ball was unleashed to the backs and Mason 'I dont need boots' Thomas was 'slip sliding away' to the line. Newbridge applied more pressure with Ollie Penny and Ioan Herbert both running nearly the full length of the pitch to put their names of the score sheet. Ioan Herbert who was toastie warm / on fire this morning, ran through the Abercwmboi defence for a couple more tries to cap a hat trick for the day. However, Abercwmboi were not giving up though and with some good hands they just manged to get to the line and the try was later confimed by the TMO.
