Newbridge Too Strong For Machen

I’m lost for words!

Newbridge U9’s visited Machen this morning and straight away the away supporters could see that it wasn’t going to be easy. Machen looked a very big and well drilled side and it showed from the start. Machen started really well and went into a quick lead as their big lads tore through Newbridge. Newbridge got one back, but Machen again took the lead with a great try. The boys knew what they were up against and decided that enough was enough, the forwards, in particular Ashton and Jake, took it up the middle a number of times and set it up for the blistering backs - this time it was Elis who received the ball and ran straight through the middle of them like a knife through butter. Machen looked to respond but the tackling from Newbrdige was immense and the ball was turned over. Ollie Penny ran hard and fast at them, shrugged a few off and opened up a gap. He put his afterburners on and raced to the line.

Newbridge were in front, but Machen were not going to let them get away with it. They pressed hard and with one tackle remaining they ran to the corner for a certain try. However, Mason was having none of it and lined up his opponent. He ran across the field and bundled him into the corner flag. Try saving tackle!

At this point , the Away supporters were well into this game, which was the best so far.

Newbridge scored a few more through Mason and Elis and so did Machen who kept coming at them. Ollie Penny had a boot in the mouth and I knew exactly what this would lead to. The red mist came down and Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Four tackles on the bounce sending Machen backwards.

Newbridge added more tries and at the end as Machen attacked, they dropped the ball, which bounced up nicely for The Prowler (Mason) who raced to the line for his fourth. Game Over.

The grit and determination from the lads today was immense. It was by far the best performance to date and is testament to their attitude, teamwork and sheer willingness to achieve.

Special mention to Mac ‘Mike Phillips’  Powell for his couple of tries last week - the rugby correspondent forgot. Well done buddy.
